Come with us to Sofia, Bulgaria today ! As you might have seen on Instagram, you can follow me here. I surprised monsieur with a trip to Sofia for our 2 years wedding anniversary. He got me a beautiful ring and a romantic diner in a very nice restaurant in London on the real date. I waited for the bank holiday weekend to take him on a secret getaway trip.
I planned my surprise in June, to get everything perfect. I wanted a European city that would be uncommon and cheap, Eastern Europe is perfect for that. I have to admit I pick Sofia for the price and convenient flight, I didn’t know anything about the city and very little about Bulgaria. And then I remembered that my former colleague Szehana was from Bulgaria ! I run into her in the City few days after I took the tickets and after meeting her I was like, wait a minute, she is Bulgarian ! We are going to Bulgaria ! She gave me good tips and once she described her country I knew we would like it. Nice monuments, good food, amazing weather, welcoming people, affordable city . What could we asked more ?
I booked an Airbnb to be in the city center, we stayed at Lucho’s place and it was very central, you can find his appartement here we walked all the time, only took the taxi to the airport, and it cost us 7,5€.
We arrived quite late on Friday and the keys were in the mailbox, convenient for us. On the Saturday we slept in a little ( there is a 2h difference with London) and went to have breakfast in a cute cafe in a patio that Szehana recommended. We had two huge pieces of fresh handmade cakes and homemade juice. Ready to hit the city ! We then walked around, went to see the Alexander Nevsky cathedral and the Saint Sofia church, a little bit of shopping and we also chilled out in Central Park.
For the outfit I wanted to have a hippie look, I picked this vintage dress that used to be a nightgown. I cut it and worn it with oversized glasses from L’Usine à lunettes and platform shoes from New Look. I like the pattern of the dress and the kimono sleeves, I think I paid 3€ for it in Emmaus in France. I have had it for a while but never a good occasion to wear it. Being on holiday I needed something very light to cope with the weather. I worn my hair extensions and the Cuban hat with my Madame Daniel Designs earrings in flashy pink as accessories. The outfit was comfortable to wear all day and discover the city.
For our first night out I planned on having drinks at Tavan, a kind of rooftop bar. We walked there and took a taxi back because it was getting dark (2,5€).The view was nice, you can see both the mountains and the city. I took a strawberry margarita ans monsieur tried the black mojitos, a Classic mojitos with a shot of blackberry vodka.
I booked a table at Cosmos restaurant. And I can’t say how much we enjoyed the meal ! First we were welcomed by a glass of proscecco which is always nice, and they told us they were happy to have us for this special occasion and the waiter and waitress seem very sincere.It was so cute and made us feel very special.
The menu is one of a kind ! You have mixes that are unusual and unique, we opted for the vegan celeriac tagliatelle with caramelized nuts cranberries and coconut mousse and the 3 traditional Bulgarian starters. It was tasty and had everything you would be looking for in a dish, texture, crunchiness, sweet touch and taste. As a main I took the Saigon-Sofia kebab which is of course much more tastier than a kebab, it has Chinese cabbage and kimchi cucumber in it.
Ludo went for something even more unique, the tuna with fermented strawberry, hibiscus and rhubarb. It was quite different that what we’re used to. The tuna was delicious it was crusted with spices but I have to admit, the strawberries were a bit too much for me. I ate the tuna by itself and then the strawberries & rhubarb. We picked the pairing so red wine for the kebab and a lillet cocktail for the tuna.
Between our starter and main, we went to see the open kitchen. The chefs came and started chatting with us, and we went amazed by their presentation technics on the plates. The chef pâtissier, told us he will come when we will be eating dessert so he can present us his work. It was very nice to see someone so passionate about his work talked to him about it. I picked the Bulgaria rose best seller, a handmade strawberry and tomato ice cream in a rose shape with rose flavoring. It was the same than the beginning of the meal, a unique culinary experience that we will remember for a long time !
We finished the meal with a homemade limoncello chatting with « monsieur pâtissier » as he called himself. We left the restaurant with their business card shaking hands and the promise we will tell our friends about this amazing place. Their goal is to get the first Michelin star in Bulgaria and I have no doubt they will get it. A true restaurant with passionate people, food you’ve tasted nowhere else, amazing products and where you feel extra special.

Aujourd’hui je vous amène découvrir Sofia en Bulgarie ! Peut-être que vous avez pu voir sur mon Instagram, (pour me suivre c’est pas ici) j’ai surpris monsieur avec un week-end en amoureux pour nos deux ans de mariage. Il m’a offert une jolie bague et un diner romantique dans un restaurant à Londres et j’ai voulu le surprendre à mon tour.
J’ai planifié ma surprise depuis le mois de juin pour que tout soit parfait. Je cherchais une capitale européenne originale et pas trop chère où il fait plutôt beau. Je dois vous avouer que quand j’ai choisi Sofia, je ne connaissais rien de la Bulgarie, j’ai vraiment pris les vols pas chers et pratiques. Et puis quelques semaines après avoir réservé les vols je me suis rappelée qu’une de mes anciennes collègues est bulgare ! J’ai donc repris contact et elle a pu m’envoyer plein de bonnes adresses. Une fois qu’elle m’a décrit son pays et la culture, je savais qu’on allait passer un bon week-end. Des monuments magnifiques, un temps de folie, 30°c, des locaux très accueillants et une nourriture faite maison avec des fruits/légumes gorgés de soleil, j’ai envie de dire, what else ?
J’ai réservé un Airbnb pour être dans le centre ville, nous sommes restés dans l’appartement de Lucho, que je vous recommande et que vous pouvez retrouver ici. Pour une nuit à moins de 30e l’endroit est parfait. Nous sommes arrivés tard le vendredi soir et les clés étaient dans une boite, et il nous avait envoyé les instructions, nous n’avons eu aucun mal à trouver ou entrer dans l’appartement.
Le samedi après une bonne nuit de repos, nous sommes allés petit-déjeuner de bons gâteaux fait-maison dans une pâtisserie, que m’avait recommandé ma collègue Szehana et qui était dans la rue du Airbnb ! Après deux grosses parts de gâteaux, nous avons visité la place principale et la cathédrale Alexandre Nevsky et l’église Sainte Sofia. Nous avons fait un peu de shopping (la Bulgarie est très connue pour la production d’eau de rose), 70% de la production d’eau de rose mondiale vient de Bulgarie. Et une petite sieste dans central park était parfaite pour profiter du soleil.
Pour ce qui est de la tenue, j’ai voulu un look un peu hippie avec cette chemise de nuit Emmaus remise au goût du jour. Je l’ai coupée et portée avec des espadrilles compensées. Les lunettes viennent de l’Usine à Lunettes et les boucles d’oreilles sont à retrouver sur madamedanieldesigns.com. J’ai dû payer cette robe 3euros et je n’avais jamais trouvé d’occasion de la mettre, elle est légère et parfaite pour les fortes chaleurs. J’ai pris le temps de mettre mes extensions pour un look encore plus hippie et mon chapeau cubain était là pour me protéger du soleil !
Pour notre première soirée, j’avais prévu d’aller boire un verre en rooftop dans un bar, Tavan, c’est un peu excentré, pas forcement hyper lounge comme nos bars mais la vu est sympa. Comme il faisait un peu noir, nous sommes revenus dans le centre en taxi pour une course à 2,50euros. J’ai pris une strawberry margarita et monsieur a gouté le black mojitos, qui était bon, un mojitos avec un shot de vodka à la mûre.
Pour le diner j’avais réservé une table dans un restaurant appelé Cosmos. Alors la, je pourrais vous en parler pendant des heures… Une super surprise, un restaurant moderne, une équipe au petits oignons et une cuisine hyper originale, nous n’avons jamais mangé dans un restaurant comme celui-ci auparavant, car ils ne sont pas abordables. Entrée, plats, desserts, plus boissons nous en avons eu pour 70euros !
Nous avons précisé à la réservation que c’était notre anniversaire de mariage, le serveur nous a offert une coupe de proscecco en arrivant en nous souhaitant plein de bonheur et qu’ils étaient honorés de nous avoir pour cette occasion. Il avait l’air vraiment sincère. Le menu est juste surprenant, les combinaisons inattendus et atypiques. Monsieur a pris l’assortiment de 3 entrées bulgares revissées en entrée, et moi j’ai opté pour l’option végan par curiosité,des tagliatelles de céleri, crème de coco, cranberry et noisettes caramélisées, c’était bon, le plat est fini sur place, la serveuse a mélangé les ingrédients pour faire une animation. Nous avions pris le pairing cocktail/plats. En plat nous avons pris le tartare de thon à la glace de fraises, hibiscus et rhubarbe vinaigrés, et le kebab version Saîgon-sofia, qui bien sur n’avait pas du tout la tête du kebab du coin de la rue ! Il y avait du kimchi et du choux chinois. C’était bon aussi, j’avoue que le thon était très surprenant il était cuit à la perfection, fondant au milieu, avec une croute d’épices sur le dessus, un délice. Les fraises par contre à déguster c’était sympa mais j’en mangerai pas tous les jours non plus, je crois que je suis plus classique pour les accompagnements !
Entre nos plats nous avons voulu voir les cuisines ouvertes, où les chefs s’activaient à préparer des assiettes plus jolies les unes que les autres ! Ils sont venus nous parler et était curieux de connaitre notre avis, ils n’étaient pas du tout prétentieux, on pouvait voir que c’était des passionnés de cuisine. Le chef pâtissier nous a dit, « Je suis monsieur pâtisserie, quand c’est le dessert appelé moi, je vous présenterai ma carte », il était tout fier. Il m’a conseillé la glace à la tomate et à la rose, sa spécialité en forme de rose, alors c’est assez drôle parce qu’on sent bien les deux gouts et ça se marie plutôt bien.
Monsieur a opté pour un « gâteau au chocolat » ( je me rappelle plus du vrai nom!) avec une émulsion au Jack Daniel et du caramel, c’était super bon !
Nous avons continué de discuter avec monsieur pâtissier, qui nous a expliqué que le restaurant voudrait avoir la première étoile en Bulgarie ( dépêchez-vous d’y aller !!!).Ils sont tous passionnés et sont assez libres, il avait vraiment l’air d’aimer son job. Il nous a offert un petit verre de son limoncello fait maison, et nous sommes repartis, rassasiés et ravis de notre expérience culinaire en nous promettant de faire connaitre ce pays et ce restaurant qui nous a bluffé.
